Who’s Bagged the Biggest LTE Deals?

After a busy year of cutthroat competition for Long Term Evolution (LTE) deals, it’s time to catch up with the group of eight LTE infrastructure vendors — aka, the “LTE G8” — to take stock of their customer wins.

So Light Reading Mobile has updated our list of the LTE G8 and their customer wins. Table 1 below shows the number of commercial deals that the suppliers say they have and the names of their publicly announced customers. (See MWC 2010: The LTE G8.)

Here’s how the LTE G8 stands at the end of 2010:

Nokia Siemens Networks appears to have the most LTE deals compared to its rivals. The vendor claims to have 22 “commercial references” for LTE, which includes 20 radio access network (RAN) contracts, 10 deals for Evolved Packet Core (EPC), and one contract for IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) for voice over LTE, which is with Verizon Wireless . Nokia Siemens is followed by Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd.Ericsson AB (Nasdaq: ERIC), andAlcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU) in terms of number of LTE deals.

But we should point out that what vendors have said publicly and what analysts see behind the scenes is sometimes at odds. According to recent research by TeleGeography Inc. , Huawei is leading the LTE pack. Telegeography found that the Chinese vendor had a 36 percent share of LTE commercial contracts in terms of the number of contracts signed, while Ericsson and Nokia Siemens each had 16 percent, followed by Alcatel-Lucent with 14 percent.

While Huawei had the highest number of LTE contracts, however, Telegeography said that Ericsson was the leading vendor in terms of the size and value of LTE contracts.

The list of LTE equipment vendors won’t be a group of eight for much longer, as Nokia Siemens Networks is about to complete the $1.2B acquisition of Motorola Inc. After that, the cellular kit clique will be slimmed down to a magnificent seven.
